Learn More About Our Beneficiaries

Box of Rain Foundation is an Annapolis-based 501 (c)(3) organization that offers year-round maritime programs and opportunities to disadvantaged Annapolis youth, ages 9-14, with a mission to nurture self-esteem and develop life skills that lead to positive contributions to the community. Box of Rain was formed in May 2003 to honor the memory of Lee Griffin, and his life and passion for sailing and his community. Since the program began, Box of Rain has had a positive impact on the lives of hundreds children and their families.

The summer program runs for 8 weeks and offers the participants swimming lessons, sailing, kayaking, boating, fishing, environmental studies and other maritime activities that foster team building and leadership skills. During the winter months, the participants are involved in Boat Building by the Bay, a joint community boat building project where participants are introduced to a variety of carpentry and construction skills and are mentored by our volunteer mentors. In the fall, Box of Rain kids are involved with Revolution Kids, a bicycle repair and maintenance course in collaboration with the Annapolis City Police, Annapolis Parks and Recreation and the Transportation Department. Throughout the year, there are field trips to such places as Calvert Cliffs, Assateague Island, the Chesapeake Maritime Museum and Baltimore Living Classrooms. For more information go towww.boxofrain.org.

The Eastport Yacht Club Foundation, the charitable arm of EYC, is actively committed to preserving the maritime character of Annapolis. Our first project was to establish and support Box of Rain in memory of Lee Griffin. That program is now well established and self supporting. We continue our community involvement through additional programs and community initiatives. Oyster Kids is on hiatus this year due to construction at the club. Ten scholarships were provided by EYCF this year to our community’s youth, including local Boy’s and Girl’s Club members, for participation in EYC’s Learn to Sail programs. We assisted the Junior Fleet with a Name the Boat fundraiser and facilitated the donation of Olaf Hoag’s donation of an inflatable and outboard motor to the Junior Fleet to be used as a support boat. MASTMAritime Skills Training program, promotes awareness and understanding of the marine trades by area students. Partners include Anne Arundel County Board of Education, the Center for Applied Technology (CAT South), and The National Sailing Center and Hall of Fame. The foundation co-sponsored, with these partners, a very successful Marine and Maritime Career Fair this winter with over 500 high school students and 25 local marine businesses in attendance. A second year scholarship was provided to Leif Carlsson, attending the New England Institute of Technology’s marine trades program in Warwick, RI. As Foundation President Stephanie Duncan-Troxell explained, “With support from our community, Eastport Yacht Club Foundation plans to expand our outreach and continue awareness of our rich maritime heritage with the goal of providing opportunities in boating, education and employment.” www.eycfoundation.org
